Matthew Shumaker is most assuredly nothing like that damn Rain Man! How I hate that movie and rue the day it was released. I am SICK of people calling folks on the autism spectrum that derogatory name. Rain Man is JUST as offensive in autism circles as racist, ethnic and national slurs are to the groups being targeted.
Asking if a person with autism is like R*** M** is like saying, “Oh, your daughter-in-law’s Italian? Is she part of a Mafia family? Is she like the Sopranos? Your cousin’s wife is black? Is she like Louise Jefferson?” I wish I had a R*** M** dart board at times like this.
Prodigious savantism affects less than 10% of people with autism and I am damn sick and tired of people applying that stereotype so liberally. Put that damn R*** M** to rest!
